So, as you know by now, I’ve eaten at just about all of the newest LA Gourmet Mobile Food Trucks. Most of them I have liked, some of them I have been a fan since day one and now consider them friends, and others I didn’t have anything nice to say, so they didn’t get a lot of mention on this blog.

Something good about these trucks must be the accessibility factor for people that are lucky enough to have the trucks come to their workplace. Not all of the trucks are necessarily fusion, right? I enjoy visiting them during First Friday or other events around the City of Angels since they don’t come to my workplace.

Last night, I feel that I found the epitome of the gourmet mobile food truck scene (aprés Kogi, who is credited with starting the trend). The context in which I “found” this new truck and ate their food was representative of what food trucks are about.

After the Dr. Horrible screening at the Egyptian, I walked around Hollywood like a tourist traveler, taking pictures and enjoying the wonders of Hollywood. I can’t believe people travel from far away places to visit the Hollywood and Highland area…

Anyway! Walking along Hollywood Blvd I saw a pink catering truck. At first I thought it was the burger truck, because it is pink as well. Then I saw the name and logo. Flying Pig. WTF? BBQ? Bacon? Pork? What is THIS? And how come I haven’t heard of it? Seriously, this was unplanned. Total surprise. Its like I’m a truck magnet or something!

As I got closer, a girl told me that this was their first day out and that they would soon hit the streets of LA. It sounded like it was right up my alley right? Plus, now I should mention that I had barely eaten all day because I was rushing around after work to even get to the screening on time (I was still late to the screening). I was REALLY REALLY HUNGRY. I should also mention that it was after 11pm and the dining opportunities at this hour aren’t too great. I was actually considering Pinks, but why go wait in line at Pinks for a hot dog, when you can just have a quick bite from a truck! Isn’t that what food trucks have always been for? Late night dining when everything else is closed?

I must have read over the menu for about 15 minutes. It all sounded so…different. What kind of food was this? Definitely not BBQ. Asian? What is it? I still can’t tell you. I have no idea how to classify this food, but I will say, it was full of Unicorns and Rainbows.

Rainbow Bright
would eat here.
It’s that good.

On their website, truck, and card, they describe their cuisine as: The perfect blend of Asian and Pacific rim flavors with French technique. And, that’s exactly what is is. That is the perfect way to describe it. I was browsing their website, and it turns out that Chefs Joe and James are Le Cordon Bleu-trained dreamers who have comprised a crack team of dedicated maniacs to present you with the finest in exuberant, street-inspired yumminess!

Of course, I did not have this information last night, and I’m kind of picky…so I went with the sliders but asked for it without sauce because I was told it was a little spicy. The sliders are $5 for two, which is very reasonable.

Behold, my new favorite truck food. These sliders were absolute perfection. The flavors, the bread, the garnish, everything worked. I loved these sliders so much? I ordered a second round. I should have brought a third round home for the next morning, because as I’m writing this out, I’m seriously craving those flavors.

So, if the sliders were good, then I could only imagine how fantastic everything else on the menu is, amiright? I plan on going back very soon because I want to have one of everything. I mean, we are talking restaurant quality goodness here! They also sell tacos, which I tried some of the meat from (it was good) but I didn’t have one for myself. What I heard about the tacos from various other curious patrons (like two other people) was that the tortillas were great and the flavors were perfect.

Don’t think that these were typical plain tortilla + meat tacos. These tacos had individual garnishes and sauces made to go with the specific filling (pork, duck). Blurry picture. I know.

DUCK! I am not a fan of duck (ever) but judging from the reaction of the people that tried the duck? I definitely need to get on that…next time for sure.

So, I am so excited to be able to FINALLY name a #1 on my list of food trucks. The Flying Pig truck wins the prize, because as of today, their food is the best that I have EVER had out of a truck. I told them about First Friday and the Art Walk and even mentioned Abbot Kinney in general, so I hope that they start making the rounds in LA soon!

In conclusion (I hate when my kids write that in essays) I think that I may be done being excited over new food trucks. How can it get any better than the Flying Pig Truck? Grilled cheese? Buttermilk? How can they even measure up to the gourmet freshness that this truck has to offer? I only hope that The Flying Pig crew keeps up the good work and enthusiasm that they had on their first night out. Please don’t start to cut corners or develop a superior attitude, because you guys bring something new and fresh to the mobile dining scene.

I am planning an event for 60 people and want to serve hamburgers. I have no idea how to pull this off.
This would be a 7hr event at my school because students have different class schedules. and would like to attend.
Any thoughts and price quote ?
Thank you,
