If you know me super well, then you know that I love going to places on the grand opening day. I know that some people believe you should give places a few days to get their groove, but if there’s one thing I’m not, its patient. Well, I’m patient at work with my kids, but not when it comes to new places opening up in Awesometown. Probably because every new place that opens up brings some glimmer of hope that it will be amazing and a viable food option in town.

I have been hearing about Five Guys Burgers and Fries for what seems like ever. The locations just always seemed so far away but I knew one day I’d get out to one. So imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago Smisko dropped the hint that Five Guys “might” be coming to town! How perfect! If this place was as epic as I had been hearing, then it surely would be a welcome addition to town! Plus?! The location was perfect! I love the new Patios so much!

So grand opening day came last Tuesday, and I made my way over after work to find not much of a line, and plenty of tables. The young man taking orders was incredibly nice and polite. Like, Chik-Fil-A opening week crew-polite. Something everyone seemed to be complaining about was the price. I don’t remember how much each thing cost, but I do know I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a drink and it came out to $9.50. RE shared her fries with me, so I wonder if adding fries to my order would have made it a $14 early dinner…

When you walk in, you are greeted by the walls boasting about how they have been voted the best over and over again. I felt like I was drowning in praise so of course I had to love it! Soon my number was called and I anxiously picked up my greasy brown paper bag! Yes!

Yeah this place is full of its self. They want you to Look signs with what some people have said awesome… then you order and it cost a fortune. I think a burger, fries and drink was almost $12! I thought they over charged me so I checked and sure enough it was the right amount.
So now I am expecting the best burger of my life… what I got was a mess of a burger that had all the flavor cooked out of it. Did they ask how I wanted it cooked? NOPE. For the record five guys it was medium rare not extra crispy.
This place needs to take down all the signs and pictures of their weird looking owner and focus on making a good burger and fries for a reasonable price. I doubt you will see that on a sign.

My bacon cheeseburger was pretty good. Fries were too salty and yes, a little soggy. I will be giving them another chance as the veggies in my household have heard good things about their veggie-burger. I want them to be good.
I had a veggie sandwich as it was meh. I liked the fries a lot but just like what Scott said, way too salty. The staff were amazingly nice and very friendly so that’s a great thing. All the In N Out talk had me craving it this week too. “)
I went Saturday night and was underwhelmed. For the record, burgers are only cooked well done, it says it on their website and I believe there was a sign. It left my burger dried out.
My fries weren’t as soggy as yours, I had some good ones, I think they were trying to make too many and the oil was cooling down. The small fries was ridiculously large, 2 hungry adults who got small burgers couldn’t finish them. I’d rather have a smaller fries than have to throw out so many. And our fries weren’t salty at all.
I liked that they had a variety of toppings. I don’t see how they won Best burger in all of these surveys etc.
I dont eat red meat so I can’t eat here and I dont really care to eat a veggie sandwich at a burger joint. Have you eaten at Tiny’s Big Bite? We’ve eaten there 2x and the food is awesome. I had a turkey burger both times and its so flavorful and so cheap( 5.45). My partner had a burger and said it was great. She also had a philly cheese steak( on another occasion) and that was great too. I hope you check it out and review it. I really hope they stay in business. They care a lot about the food. Mondays in Dec is b1g1 free( they are only open for breakfast/lunch and only M-F).
@lisa – Wow they had a sign? So they aren’t even hiding the fact. How can a place that tries to sell it self as a high end burger place expect any creditability if you can’t get a burger the way you want.
N8i, it’s part of their “philosophy.” They claim they know how to cook a burger well done and keep it juicy. Mine was pretty juicy, I’ll have to admit.
I didn’t realize the standard burger was a double burger and the “small” burgers were single. I will probably go for the small next time. I agree that the fries portion was way over the top. I hate to waste food.
Let’s face it, it’s a burger joint. You can make them better at home. Mine are World Famous!
;-P
[...] burger fell apart and the fries were soggy. I’ll probably try Five Guys sometime this week LADY DUCAYNE This entry was posted in Daily Brief. Bookmark the permalink. ← City Conducting library [...]
I am not worried about juice, I want flavor which they had none. I did like I could get mushrooms and Jalapenos though.
I’ve been looking to try Five Guys… I had some pretty great at the Kona Crisp last night.
I have yet to try this location but from past experiences I really enjoyed it and would recommend. That being said a friend of mine that was with me those times in the past has been a little disappointed with this location as it just hasn’t put things together properly yet. Hopefully they will soon.
I don’t plan on stopping by until it dies down just a little and hopefully things will be better and how they should be.
Just tried them last week. Liked my mini burger, but the fries had seasoning salt (like Lawry’s), in fact you could smell the seasoning salt once you walk in the door. I’d go back, sans fries. Glad the SCV finally has one!
Won’t go out of my way for this burger. Disappointing that the burger comes wrapped in foil (whether you get the burger to-go or ready to eat at the restaurant)…because the bun was smushed/slightly soggy and came across to me as slightly disrepectful to the burger as a whole. This place seemed to be about the what’s between the bun, lots of topping options, which are nice, but the bread ruined it for me. Also the fries were nothing special…and my son has peanut allergies, so the complimentary in-store peanuts were a concern. Prefer In-n-Out/the Habit or even some of the burgers at Islands/Claim Jumpers in this price range. For an affordable custom burger, Five Guys seems ok and it’s a nice option in SCV. If you’re willing to pay/drive for a gourmet burger, Umami in LA (Fred Segal location has wine, too) is still worthwhile (eg. truffle burger) and probably the best I’ve tasted so far. (The Counter was so/so. Apple Pan overpriced. Still have yet to try Father’s Office.)
Five Guys is popular on the East Coast. I tried them in Chicago. They are okay, but don’t come close to The Kona Crisp’s fries and burgers – especially for the price. Better than the Habit, though.
