Marked5.
Where do I start? Maybe I should start at the beginning…
On May 30th I set out to find the Marked5 truck (for the first time) after hearing about it. And by hearing about it, I mean one person told me that there was a truck that sold really good Japanese food. This person had not tried the truck yet, but had heard it from someone that had. Are you still with me?
So I went to Intelligentsia, Silver Lake for an Angeleno and kept checking Twitter for updates on when Marked5 would arrive to the area. Nothing. Checked again. Nothing. Two Angelenos and an Iced Tea later, after giving up and getting moody, they finally arrived down the street.
It was totally worth it. I had a katsu sandwich and an order of egg rolls. And that’s when I met Luis (my brother from another mother and another father) and Tran (who reminds me of a student) for the first time. Two young hard working guys that were really passionate about the food they were serving. I was really impressed because this was something I had never eaten before. Instead of a bun or bread, there were two squares of white rice holding the sandwich together. And don’t even get me started on that katsu sauce!
When I later tried explaining to people what the sandwiches were about, they seemed to think it was like rice cakes (um. NO), so the best way I could find to describe it is sushi rice but molded into a square. Does that make sense? No? Um, well just look at the photo…
They have some different types of sandwiches so surely everyone can find something they would like.
Since that fateful day in May, I have lost count of how many times I have eaten there. I have also since met David, the general manager and of course Luis and Tran are always there working hard. It has also happened that I keep running into them totally randomly. Very convenient when I want to get my Marked5 katsu on!
Here is a photo I took of them parked outside of Intelligentsia Venice.
Look at that crowd!
Follow them on Twitter (@marked5) for their locations and make sure to check their website for more information.
