When this place opened back in January 2007, I became an instant regular. I would visit Karma once a week because their lunch buffet was decently priced and had a nice variety. I should mention that Indian food is one of my most favorite cuisines! The curries would change often and it was always nice to try something different since I would try to come on different days of the week. I would always have the same waiter, who knew my drink order without even asking, and I would always get the same table. It was always a very nice experience!
Then, many months later it all changed, and I didn’t go back to Karma again, before today. That fateful day, after being seated and serving myself, I noticed that the buffet was a little low on most items. I asked the waiter (who was my same usual waiter) if they would be bringing out more tandoori chicken. He replied something along the lines of “you should not eat more chicken because you will get fat”. I was shocked, but gave him the benefit of the doubt. I actually said “you are joking right?” and he said he wasn’t joking, and essentially repeated himself again, adding that if I ate more chicken I would get fatter and this time he laughed like a maniac. Now, I’m not skin and bones, but I’m not obese either. That’s me in the picture on the header of this blog, and most of you guys reading this know me in person so…yeah…I took offense to his comments. And even if I was obese, is it really his business? I think not.
I ended up asking for the check, and left the restaurant as my eyes were starting to water. Pathetically, I ended up having a good cry afterwards and thus started my year and a half boycott of this place. Not that many people knew about this before I wrote this blog entry.
So today, I put on some slimming pants and went back to Karma for their buffet. Carrie had been talking about it during the week, and @LvtoTravel wanted to go. I should mention that @LvtoTravel was with me at the time of the previously mentioned incident…
The first thing I noticed was that the same waiter was working, but thank goodness he did not approach my table. Eye contact was made, and I’m pretty sure he remembered me, but I was there for the food! Oh, and I also used my iPhone to take photos. It just didn’t feel right to use the SLR at this place.
Since this was a weekend, they had a special buffet that was full of variety! Three different curries (including my favorite – Goat), rice, salad, sides, and even fruit. Drinks and endless naan were also included! Excellent!
For about $12.00 I ate some very good Indian food without having to leave Santa Clarita, and that to me is a successful dining experience.
The curry was full of flavor and the tandoori chicken which had been the cause of so much grief, was now flowing.
My only issue was with the flies that were inside of the restaurant. They even visited our table and our food.
At one point we counted three different flies! I didn’t see any doors open, but this can’t be normal!
So, despite the backstory on this place, would I go back? Probably. The food was good and decently priced. The service was good too. I still feel really uncomfortable coming here though, but I can’t deny the fact that their buffet is a really good deal.
I may never be a regular again, but I wont rule it out completely.
