After leaving Cammarano’s I walked over to a dollar store in the same shopping center. This isn’t Dollar Tree or the 99 cents store. This is one of those mom and pop dollar stores where nothing really ever costs a dollar. These are popular in the valley and throughout LA.
So imagine my surprise when I stepped inside to find what comes across as a “neighborhood corner store” where you can go and buy one or two last minute essentials. I actually overheard a man on the phone saying he had walked here from his house. Maybe he needed some Fabuloso?
Anyway, not only is this place calling itself a “dollar store” but guess what? Most things DO cost a buck! Or, in the case of this fortified atole (don’t see that at Bristol Farms), 2 for 1.
And, this is where I mention that they have a great deal of authentically Mexican grocery products and candy. Heck! You can even get some ghetto invites for your Quinceañera. Looking for a ghetto way to announce your wedding? They’ve got that too, in the form of an 8 pack! Sorry, I didn’t take a photo, but here are some (awesome) butterscotch and toffee Mexican caramels. These used to be my favorites back when I ate Mexican candy.
Mexican candy is in abundance at this shop. Candy that I haven’t eaten since I was 10, and back then it only cost a nickel! I know that makes me feel old (I’m only 26), but really! When I used to buy this candy in Mexico it only cost between 5-10 cents each. Oh, and I had to resist the urge to purchase a box of De la Rosa Peanut Mazapan! I used to love these, but haven’t had one in many years.
If you are looking for some mole or Mexican vanilla, then this store has you covered! You can’t go wrong with Doña Maria!
They carry some (non glass) Mexican soda, chorizo, and basic veggies which they keep in a refrigerated section towards the back of the store. One of the ways to my heart is through Sidral and/or Sangria Señorial! I prefer glass, but I’ll take what I can get!
And for you Mexican coke fanatics (myself included), they have some of that too! Cheaper than at Vallarta in Newhall! Trust!
And how about some Bolis? Just like the ones they sell at the border. Just sayin’…
As I approached the register I noticed some paletas! The nice cashier informed me that they had just been delivered! I love mango and any fruit. Pressed for time and unsure what to get, I grabbed one that read “fruit bar” assuming I would get a little of everything!
Yeah, well…it must have been a long day at work because turns out they ALL say fruit bar! HA! I hurried home eager to eat my paleta when I realized that I had gotten a cucumber/lime paleta! Gross! I guess this means I will have to go back and actually read the packaging. I don’t mind!
