I finally did it! I can finally say that yes, I, Lady Ducayne, have been to 49th Parallel in Vancouver! I had been wanting to visit this shop for over a year, but had never made it to the Kitsilano area before. It doesn’t matter how many times I visit Vancouver, there is just never enough time to see it all!
After a stop at Granville Island Market (one of my most favorite places ever) we made our way to 49th Parallel. Walking. Someone had told my dad it was only a few blocks away, but in reality? It was a long walk, at an uphill slope. It doesn’t look that far away in Google Maps, but take my word for it. Walking from Granville Island to 49th Parallel is quite a trek. We just kept walking, and walking, and walking some more waiting for this shop to appear.
And then, I heard the choir of angels! There it was! Pretty unassuming shop from the outside, its nestled between a stroller shop and a clothing store. The first thing I noticed was that the place was PACKED! Just about every table was taken up, however unlike in the States, these people were actually drinking coffee and eating pastries! No loiterers to be found! Awesome!
The shop is really nice! Simple menu, some lovely looking pastries, and a set color scheme. I really liked the setup too. It is basically one long bar, and the shop is a bit narrow. Of course, what epic coffee shop would be complete without highly trained professional baristas? Holla! Oh, and check out that machine! Probably the most awesome one I have ever seen in person!
What followed was one of the most EPIC lattes I have ever had in my life. There really isn’t anything else to say, other than the fact that this shop completely lived up to all the good things I had heard about it. 49th Parallel? I love you!

[…] July 11, 2010 by ladyducayne As much as I love Intellivenice, there is something about Espresso Cielo that brings back that feeling of jetting away to Vancouver. Remember that only three shops in the ENTIRE United States carry these beans. This is my favorite coffee shop in Southern California. It will forever be the place where I first experienced the wonder of 49th Parallel, my most favorite roaster. Coincidentally, it wasn’t until a month later during the Olympics that I finally made it to their actual shop in Vancouver. […]
