One of my favorite local business success stories in Santa Clarita is Bake You Happy! I couldn’t be happier for Kim and Kim who went from slanging their cupcakes a half dozen at a time out of a case at Its a Grind in Castaic, to slanging out of a shared commercial kitchen in Castaic, to winning Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, to opening up their own shop in the Barnes and Noble shopping center, to appearing on Cupcake Wars a SECOND time, and now, they have a SECOND location in Canyon Country!

Taking over the old Cupcake Tree spot, they have decorated the interior to suit their signature whimsical homey Bake You Happy look.

The greatest thing about this location is that they have room in the back to host birthday parties and offer classes!

For birthday parties they let kids decorate their own box, decorate their own cupcakes, and just have a good time with frosting.

They will even write the names on the chalk wall! This is a cute perk for kids!

Additionally they will offer workshops so you can learn how to decorate. As soon as my schedule clears up I am going to make it a point to attend these classes, and let me tell you why…

Kim Aeck is one of the most TALENTED people I know when it comes to creating BEAUTIFUL and ARTISTIC cakes. She can make a cake look like anything. So that means that we (SCV residents) can learn from the best. She’s like the fondant whisperer.  I’ve always admired her work.

So, for those of you on the other side of town, I believe this is the only cupcake shop in Canyon Country! Enjoy and make it a point to visit! They are located in the same shopping center as Edwards Cinema. What a perfect pre/post movie treat! Also, I always like to give a dozen as a gift or I’ll pick some up if I’m going to a party. Its a great hostess gift. Additionally, here is a pro-tip. Kim’s cookies are something else. The tahitian salt cookies she makes are some of my absolute favorites. So don’t forget to pick up some cookies too.

So I could go on and on about how I’ve been a fan of Bake You Happy since their very early days, but you all know that by now. The thing about this shop is that they like to introduce new items, and recently, inspired by Sprinkles, they have introduced the Cupcake Ice Cream Sandwich.

I had something similar in LA a few weeks back, and am thrilled to see I can just go down the street and around the corner to have this refreshing summer treat. Essentially you pick your cupcake and can add ice cream for a dollar more. They cut the cupcake in half, and the ice cream goes in the middle and its presented in a deep, wide cup. Grab a spoon and enlightented.

After lunch, Jason and I headed over to Bake You Happy for dessert and a little ice cream date (as is tradition). We shared a carrot cupcake (with great frosting, my goodness) and a scoop of Vanilla.

Needless to say we ate it all.

However, we go all out when we go for ice cream, so we also ordered a giant ice cream sandwich! These cookies are made at BYH and the sandwiches are frozen. So this is the perfect to-go treat, or if you have time to hang out and chit chat while it thaws out, that’s a good option. This is a nice sized quality ice cream sandwich (none of the over hyped Diddy Riese stuff).  Luckily, Jason is a strong man, so he tore it in half and we happily ate. It was a good day!

When I first heard rumblings of a Sprinkles ice cream shop many moons ago, I was instantly intrigued. I love Sprinkles cupcakes, and I love ice cream…I could only imagine how great this shop could be. When I found out the grand opening date, I had it on my calendar, but I couldn’t make it because of work obligations.

For a while, my BFF had been hearing me talk about Spinkles ice cream and how it was now open and I had to check it out. So earlier this month after going to 800 Degrees, we headed over to Beverly Hills, cruised Rodeo Drive in a BMW, blasted some music, said some Romy and Michelle quotes regarding Pretty Woman…and you can only imagine the cliche we became. Total cliche. Sup.

I have spent many minutes (once almost an hour) in line outside of Sprinkles for cupcakes. They are the perfect party favor, birthday gift, hostess gift, party snack, etc. I once waited 45 minutes to get two dozen for some of my students that won a district wide contest. I’m a pro at this…therefore I knew there would be a line outside the ice cream shop (logic). The line wasn’t bad at all, maybe about ten minutes, and most of it was inside waiting to order. Which was fine because I couldn’t decide what to order (check out the flavors above), and I got to check out the decor of the very white shop.

Sprinkles Ice Cream is not cheap, but they do use quality ingredients and I think you pay for the experience and surroundings as well. Beverly Hills prices, kids. Maybe I’ve been exploring and hanging out in LA too long (born and raised) but I wasn’t appalled by the prices like some people have been.

So as we waited, I was like a kid in an ice cream shop.

I couldn’t decide what I wanted. So many cool choices…

And then S (the history major) noticed that Thomas Jefferson’s ice cream recipe was written above us. Ha.

S decided to get the Cupcake ice cream sandwich. Now personally, I had never heard of such a thing, but now that I think about it…its genius! When she got her order we were amazed to find that it was a whole Sprinkles cupcake with the top cut off, and a bunch of ice cream packed in between all served in a cup.

Cupcake ice cream sandwich. Genius.

I ordered a scoop of vanilla bean (my favorite ice cream flavor, don’t judge) in a red velvet waffle cone. This was my second choice. My first choice was sold out. So I guess since they make everything fresh, things sell out quickly. Good to know. Anyway, I liked it. It tasted fresh and was perfect for a warm day.

However, I have left the best for last…

Since they sell ice cream sandwiches (apparently the new LA trend) they make their own cookies! I am not the biggest cookie fan (we know this by now) but when I saw “salted oatmeal cornflake” as a choice? I had to have it. Done.

Yes. It was salty and really good and I should have ordered more than one. My new favorite LA cookie hands down. Apparently these sell out too because she wasn’t sure they even had any left.

This is the seating option. Totally open, you sit where the window would be. I really like that. You can people watch, hang out, small talk with others, etc. Nice design.

So as we finished our ice cream, it occurred to me that we had yet to successfully try the Spinkles ATM! We had tried a few weeks prior around 11pm, but the line was easily 80 deep. This time there was no line! I guess people were busy waiting in line outside the cupcake shop, and you can only buy one at a time from the ATM. So it worked out! How LA is this?

Behold, the Sprinkles Cupcake 24 Hour ATM Machine!

I totally bought a red velvet to go. Awesome.

Yesterday after work I was catching up on my Twitter stream when I saw that Velvet Cupcakes at the mall (which I first blogged last November) announced they were now serving pour over cups of Intelligentsia coffee. As of right now, Undergrounds is the only other place doing so in SCV, so of course I was excited. By now you are all fully aware of our coffee snobbery, and how the SCV Crew makes frequent trips to Intelli just to get our fix, and other third wave shops throughout LA. So hearing that I could get some orange bag Intelli goodness so close to home, and at a cupcake shop totally made my day.

Before trivia, N8 and I met up for dinner and stopped by Velvet Cupcakes for some coffee. The girls working were really nice to us, and talked us through the pour over method. Although we are super familiar with this (coffee snobs remember) it was nice to see these girls so excited to prepare our cups of coffee!

Each cup of coffee you order starts with freshly ground beans and ends up as a fresh cup. Sure it may take a little longer, but it is so worth it!

And…as if that wasn’t enough…as we were drinking our coffee, we were told that starting Friday they would be selling Banana Pudding.

I was so incredibly excited! Those of you that remember my birthday, 2010 remember that HUGE bowl of Banana Pudding that we couldn’t stop gushing over. Well, instead of having to go to Magnolia Bakery in LA…I can now just go to the patios and not only get myself a cup of Intelli, but also some of the best banana pudding, ever? Jackpot! Nate had to hear me gush about this banana pudding all evening. As did everyone I saw at trivia…

So, SCV…have I let you down yet? Trust me on this one! Head over to Velvet Cupcakes for a cup of coffee and some banana pudding. You can thank me later! And, if you have heard us tweet and blog and talk about our love of coffee and have wondered what all the Intelli fuss is about? Now you can check it out for yourself! Do @mic_dee a favor though, try it without the cream and sugar? Just once!

Oh, and of course! You can’t forget the cupcakes!

Awesometown (Valencia) has its very first legit cupcakery! It has been a long time coming, but yesterday an actual storefront shop finally opened up and they were selling out faster than they could make them. The shop was crowded and it smelled like cupcakes! Very neat. Not only did it smell good, but the place is adorable!

It reminded me very much of the Sprinkle’s layout, with seating at the window so you can people watch. Additionally? It is located right across the way from Sephora and other shops in the new section of the Paseos.

Yesterday I had a strawberry cupcake, since they were sold out of most flavors. Today I went back to Sephora (heaven) and decided to stop by and try two more flavors.

This time around I had the Peanut Butter Chocolate. Chocolate cake and peanut butter acting as the frosting.

And of course, my go to flavor at ANY bakeshop…the always classic Red Velvet. This one had a tiny heart in the center. Very cute.

They also carry their own bottled water, Groundworks coffee, sodas, and the always classic Mexican Coke. Medio Litro. Can’t think of a better pairing with cupcakes.

I think this is the best thing to open up in Valencia in a long time. Sure there are two other storefronts in Canyon Country and Saugus, but this one PWNS them all by far. By a mile. By acres. Since it is a storefront, I could easily stop by after work for a sweet treat. It is also a great place to meet up with friends. We ended up sitting outside for a bit, under the sun, chatting, and people watching.

All around us, there were people sitting at the tables, including kids, just eating cupcakes. It was a really nice, casual, low key, scene at the Patios today. Not a bad way to spend a day off work.

I still love Bake You Happy, but this is a nice place to hang out and a welcome addition to the SCV! Velvet Cupcake is BY FAR the BEST cupcake shop (STOREFRONT) out of the three we have in town. I’m sure that anyone that goes there will enjoy the ambience.

Cupcakes are $3 each.

It seems like only yesterday I randomly stumbled upon Bake You Happy. It was a great find, unexpected, local, cupcake perfection. For the longest time, Bake You Happy lacked a storefront and they were  available in limited qualities at Its A Grind if you got there early enough. Of course my friends and I often placed orders, but it  wasn’t like we could just have one anytime we wanted.

Back in July, some of us were getting the Bake You Happy craving so we got together and had a second tasting, which of course, was perfection. Still…these cupcakes are so epic that it was a bit frustrating to think that we couldn’t just go somewhere whenever we got the craving and buy one.

Which brings me to last week…my brother Hsiawen said he saw an ad for Bake You Happy in a local magazine and informed me that they had a new kitchen. Whut!?!? I called Kim and asked where they were located and if we could stop by and buy single cupcakes. It turns out they have been at their new kitchen for only a few weeks and she invited us to stop by and check it out. It isn’t a storefront, but you could certainly call ahead and see what they have available that day. Or simply call her for pick up. No, really. Do it. You wont regret it.

So last night my friends and I gathered at their new kitchen space, located on Industry Drive in Castaic/Valencia. You can ask Zigler to clarify which city it is in. All I know is that it is very close to home. Success. Here are some just out of the oven!

They share the kitchen with Victoria Duvall of Cookie Couture (she was on the O List) and it is very clean and crisp! Soon almost 20 of us had gathered to visit with Kim, check out the new space, and eat cupcakes. Kim had a great variety of cupcakes available, but I went straight for the Peanut Butter. It was amazing. Moist chocolate filled with peanut butter. My new favorite Bake You Happy offering for sure.

Well…maybe it is actually tied with the Smore Cupcake…guess what? It has a graham cracker crust. A cupcake with a graham cracker crust! It is AMAZING x 100. Seriously. I didn’t know a smore cupcake could be this good. Nothing frilly, just a dainty cupcake consisting of quality ingredients and moist chocolate.

As the crowd started to thin out, Kim let some of us try our hand at decorating cupcakes! Here is Deb doing a great job as Kim looks on.
Here is 13 year old Katie who proved to be a natural!
And here is Kyle Jon!
If you follow my blog then you know that I’m always trying cupcakes anywhere and everywhere, so believe me, this place is really special. Bake You Happy definitely slangs some of my favorite cupcakes. They have new individual boxes available so I think I’m definitely going to do that for co-worker gifts this year. Plus! Kim delivers within the SCV!
I’m so happy to see this bakery growing and I know big things are happening for Kim Thurman and Kim Aeck! If you have a craving, feel free to give them a call for pick up. Even if you only want one or two, I’m sure they’ll make it happen. I love these cupcakes so much and I know my friends are all believers now too! Oh and they are on Twitter too!

Last year I happened upon Bake You Happy’s cupcakes by chance at Its A Grind, Castaic. I loved them so much that I knew I wanted to tell my friends. And that is when I asked Kim if she would set a price and let us do a cupcake tasting. That night was one of the best outings ever! We all became Bake You Happy fans! Success! They don’t have a storefront, but you can place custom orders for cakes and cupcakes by going to their website. They do amazing work and they have a variety of flavors as well.

In recent conversation the idea of getting together for a second cupcake tasting came up, so I contacted Kim and asked her if she’d be willing to do it again. I was so happy when she said she would and quickly got to work on picking the flavors.

I picked six flavors, most of which were new, two of which we had tasted last time. The previous flavors were caramel apple and heavenly chocolate. The new flavors were strawberry, lemon, banana, and snickerdoodle.

As a bonus, Kim brought red velvet for us! We had all enjoyed that flavor last time! That was a lovely surprise! Last time I think there were only 15 of us, but this time around there were about 22 of us in attendance! The tasting went by super quick, much faster than last time, but it all worked out as we had a second stop tonight.

As Kim went through and introduced each flavor there was a lot of “OMGZ” “SO GOOD” and fingerlicking heard within Its A Grind, which graciously hosted us. I didn’t stop and photograph every cupcake individually since I was busy eating, but these are the ones I was able to get:

Red Velvet

Heavenly Chocolate – Love.

Caramel Apple

This was a total success and I want to thank Kim for all of her hard work! Seriously, if you ever need a cake or a cupcake, Bake You Happy is a good choice.

And a HUGE thanks to everyone that came out: Mike, Jacob, Scott, Bree, Madeline, Greg, Kendra, Jay, Susan, Teagan, Troy, Hsiawen, Deb + sisters, Mike M., Cherylle + kids, RE, Jeffrey, Aleks + friend, and Andreanna!
