Yes, I have a special occasion coffee place, and its not Intelligentsia. I’ve been to Intelligentsia countless times (seriously. I’ve lost count) but I have only been to LA MILL three times. Not because it is out of the way in a far off land. It’s actually just in Silverlake, extremely close to Ricky’s Fish Tacos and other places I frequent.

The reason I have only been here three times is because I don’t feel it is a place where you can just go in and out with your coffee. I mean, literally you can get your coffee to go, but in order to have the full LA MILL experience, I think you need to sit and order something other than coffee. Something like food and/or dessert. Of course, if you are in a hurry you can just grab a cupcake and go.

If you follow my blog, then you are aware of my preference for iced flavored coffee. The Angeleno at Intelligentsia is my ultimate drink of choice. Well, guess what? Los Angeles Magazine actually named the iced coffee at LA MILL as the best in the City of Angels. I have never had iced coffee at LA MILL, so I can’t say if I agree with that statement. All I will say is that it is pretty tough to top an Intelligentsia (VENICE) Angeleno…

My weekly SL Angeleno. I'm done. Over it. Finished. by you.

Having said that, on this visit I was honestly planning on just getting a quick drink and leaving. The day before was a somewhat rough day and I just wanted something to cheer me up. If there’s anything I’ve learned after last Saturday, its that sometimes Ben and Jerry aren’t enough. I think I have outgrown them…

My first visit to LA MILL back in January will always be a memorable one, and I’m about to tell you why. I have only told this story to a few people, pre blog. I always associate LA MILL with one of my favorite musicians, Hunter Burgan. I am a huge AFI fan, and if you know me well then you are aware of this. Love Like Winter. The Interview. Silver and Cold. I could go on and on.

Coincidentally, this story also takes place around the same time I got a Twitter account. Anyway, one of the first people I added on Twitter was Hunter because he’s a cool guy and hello? He’s a rockstar! Also, he was on Twitter before it was cool. He’s a trendsetter. One night I sent out a general tweet saying that I was going to Intelligentsia and soon after I got a DM from Hunter saying Mmmmm! Intelligentsia! Enjoy!”

What? Tranquil Mammoth was DM’ing ME? Soon after I sent out that initial tweet, I changed my mind and headed to LA MILL instead, and so I told Hunter this. Did he blow me off? No! He replied again! “I don’t like LA MILL as much as Intelligentsia, but I’m kinda picky when it comes to coffee. I don’t order a lot of sugary fanciness.”

It was pretty awesome to be interacting about coffee with Hunter Burgan, but since I had never been to LA MILL, I had no idea what to order! I told Hunter this once I was seated inside and was browsing through the menu books. Too many choices! So what does Hunter recommend? In his own words: Order the extremely overpriced orange chocolate cappuccino…add soy to take it over the $6 mark.

Now I respect and admire Hunter a lot, but I’m not a fan of soy, so I ordered straight from the menu. As you know, I’m not a coffee afficionado, and I never order a cappuccino, but after that fateful night in January, it became my “usual” at LA MILL. I let Hunter know just how much I enjoyed his recommendation. His response? I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’d feel bad otherwise.

I also have a “usual” dessert at LA MILL that is honestly one of my favorite desserts ever! It is called Espresso Chocolate Panna Cotta and it consists of Bailey’s ice cream, coconut ravioli, and chocolate coconut streusel. This dessert is priced at $9. I know that is a little steep, but remember, this is my special occasion place. I’m not eating this dessert weekly. I wish!

LA MILL also has awesome food and I actually took my mom there for Mother’s Day. However this time around, I just went for coffee and dessert. I like LA MILL because it is something different. It is not just a coffee shop. It is a fancy bourgeois place, and although I don’t like this part, sometimes that means snooty waitresses in mom jeans. In fact, 2/3 times that I have been there, the waitress has been incredibly snooty.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Anthony Bourdain (love him): Context and memory play powerful roles in all the truly great meals in one’s life.

I can apply that quote to my first visit in January. I remember that night fondly. One of my favorite musicians gave me a personal coffee recomendation, Phillip still worked there, and Scott Speedman was sitting at the bar area. I thought for sure Felicity would show up at any moment…
